Plenary Indulgence for the “Year of St. Francis” (2026)

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
To commemorate the Eighth Centenary of the death (passage to heaven) of St. Francis of Assisi, the Holy See has issued a Decree announcing a special “Year of St. Francis.” This period of grace will run from January 10, 2026, to January 10, 2027, following the close of the Ordinary Jubilee. During this time, the Church opens her spiritual treasury, granting a Plenary Indulgence to the faithful.
Here is the guide to participating in this grace:

A Time of Grace The special year begins on January 10, 2026, and concludes on January 10, 2027.

Who Can Obtain the Indulgence?

1. The Franciscan Family: Members of the First, Second, and Third Orders (Regular and Secular), and institutes inspired by the Saint.
2. All the Faithful: All Catholics who fulfill the conditions listed below.

How to Obtain the Indulgence (For all faithful) With a spirit detached from any sin, the faithful must perform the following:

1. Pilgrimage: Visit any Franciscan conventual church, or any place of worship named after St. Francis or connected to him.
2. Prayer & Meditation: Devoutly participate in the Jubilee rites or spend a suitable period of time in pious meditation at the church.
3. Special Intentions: Pray that “sentiments of Christian charity towards one’s neighbour” may spring up in hearts, and for “harmony and peace among peoples”.
4. Concluding Prayers: Conclude with the Our Father, the Creed, and invocations to the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Clare, and all saints of the Franciscan Family.
5. Usual Conditions: Fulfill the three standard conditions: Sacramental Confession, Eucharistic Communion, and Prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father.

Special Comfort for the Elderly and Sick: The elderly, the sick, those who care for them, and all who for serious reasons cannot leave their homes, may also obtain the Plenary Indulgence. They must be detached from sin, intend to fulfill the three usual conditions as soon as possible, join spiritually in the Jubilee celebrations, and offer their prayers and sufferings to the Merciful God.

The Spirit of the Jubilee: In a time when peace is often distant, this Year spurs us to imitate the “poor man of Assisi.” We are invited to transform our hope into “zeal and fervour of active charity” and to become constant witnesses of peace.
(Please avail yourselves of this opportunity for grace. Our priests are available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation to assist you in receiving this indulgence.)
